Lipscomb University signs Addi Pelham
“Head coach Brandon Rosenthal and the Lipscomb Volleyball program announced the signing of four standouts during the early signing period on Wednesday:
Addi is an absolute fantastic prospect coming out of Kansas City, an area that we know extremely well. She has really come on to the scene the last couple of years and has proved to be a dominant player, and one that can play multiple positions. We see her as somebody that can jump right in and compete for that starting position on the right side immediately. Early on in the process, we really coveted her ability to play in multiple spots. But as the recruiting went on, it became more and more evident that her best position to get kills at a high rate is on the right side. I believe she will be the same caliber of player as Megan Kuper, one that can play six rotations. It will be fun to see as she’s fairly young in the club world. She is also a fabulous student both on and off the court. She continues to grow within the community and her leadership ability. We are extremely excited to be in a position to have Addi. At the height of recruiting, her name was one that was passed around as one that her stock was continuing to grow, and it’s been fun to see her game rise to that occasion.”

Private schools across northern Johnson County focus on in-person learning
Read MoreMany private schools across northern Johnson County are starting classes with a combination of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning over the next few weeks. The emphasis on in-person or hybrid learning across private schools stands in contrast with the Shawnee Mission School District, which is opting for remote learning for all students. Shawnee Mission administrators have indicated there are plans in the works for elementary students to return to in-person learning — that’s coming later this week.
School administrators at Pembroke Hill, Maranatha Christian Academy, The Barstow School and the Johnson County area elementary and high schools under the Archdiocese of Kansas City, all shared plans for mitigation measures to prevent spread of COVID-19 within their school buildings, as well as contingency plans for known positive cases.

As districts stay online, private schools open, draw students | The Kansas City Star
After some public school districts announced they would start the school year with most students at home, Maranatha Christian Academy started fielding calls.
“Enrollment numbers shot up even this week, once the Shawnee Mission school district and others announced they were not going to open in a normal fashion,” Janet Fogh, head of school, said last week. “Three families are here right now touring. We accepted seven or eight different families yesterday. We’re doing tours as fast as we can. It’s really surprising.”
The private school in Shawnee was among the first in the region to bring students back to class, on Aug. 10. Its roughly 320 students are having their temperatures regularly checked, playing sports with precautions, social distancing and wearing masks most of the day, except at gym and recess.

MCA plans a new Shawnee campus | The Kansas City Star
Maranatha Christian Academy plans to build a new campus on 27 acres at the northeast corner of 71st and Silverheel streets in Shawnee.
The Shawnee City Council recently gave its blessing for the school and a nearby athletic field — after some nearby residents voiced concerns about noise, traffic and stadium lighting. More detailed plans will be considered later.
Maranatha officials want to consolidate operations at a single location where they can host events instead of looking for other venues, Janet Fogh, head of school, said by email. The opening is targeted for August 2022.
With an enrollment of 321 students, Maranatha now operates from two Shawnee locations: the north campus for elementary students at 15000 W. 63rd St. across from Swarner Park and a secondary school in rented space at Cross Points Church in the 6800 block of Lackman Road.
“Having our own campus will serve to increase school identity and school pride,” Fogh said.
The total construction cost is estimated at $25 million, with the first phase coming in at $15 million. The school ultimately could accommodate 600 students.
‘“We are thankful for the generosity of many,” Fogh said. “We did have one very generous, anonymous donor who has donated $5 million, which is how we were able to purchase the land, debt-free, and have money for initial expenditures.
“We are a college-prep school with excellent, award-winning academics, fine arts and athletics,” Fogh said. “Our motto is Wisdom Character Service, and we seek to train our students to be leaders of good character, ready to excel at the next step and to be valuable members of the community.”
