Steve Gordon

Steve Gordon is Director of Bands and Senior High Vocal Music instructor at Maranatha Christian Academy in Shawnee, Kansas. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree and Masters of Music Education from the University of Kansas with a Minor in Trumpet Performance, and taught twelve years in public schools prior to coming to Maranatha Academy in 1991.

Under his direction, the Maranatha Concert Bands have received superior ratings at the Association of Christian School International music festivals in six of the seven years they participated, and were awarded first place in their division in the Worlds of Fun Midwest Regional Concert Band Festival in 1997 and 1998. His Mixed Chorus placed second in their division at Worlds of Fun in 1995, 1996 and 1997.  Since joining the Kansas State Activities Association, the high school Concert Band has received superior ratings in a majority of its appearances there, and the Senior High Chorus has been awarded superior ratings in the last two years.

In 2015, he received both the Kansas Association of Independent and Religions Schools and the Shawnee Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year awards.  

He is a member of National Association for Music Education, Kansas Music Educators Association, Kansas Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu Honorary Bandmasters Fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi Educational Honor Society and Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Music Society.

He has served as district representative to the State Executive Board of K.B.A., and was elected to the office of state secretary for that organization in 1987. He has served on the KSHSAA Contest Rules Committee, K.M.E.A. Southeast District honor band chair, Southeast District President-elect, Northeast District honor band chair, and he directed the State Lions Band in 1991. He founded the Great Plains Regional Honor Band and Choir for the Association of Christian Schools International in 1996 and his writings have been published in “The Instrumentalist”, one of the foremost instrumental music education publications in the nation, as well as the Kansas Music Review.  He has been a member of the Board of Directors for Mercy and Truth Medical Missions, Inc. and currently serves as Board Chair.

Mr. Gordon and his wife Cathy make their home in Shawnee, Kansas. They have four children and nine grandchildren.
