The “Real Cost” of the Senior Trip
When we parents hear the cost of the senior trip it’s almost sticker shock – – $2,000.00 plus for a week. But when we break it down, and look at the alternative trips, it’s not really “that bad.”
The cost of the trip includes all of the travel expenses from Kansas City to the Port of Departure, usually airline flights to/from Florida (an remember, this is Spring Break week so airfare is higher than usual), bus transport in/around the port area, hotels in the Port of Departure depending on flights, all expenses on the cruise ship (room cost, all regular meals, entertainment, federal and local taxes, port fees and charges, on-board gratuities), and, as funds allow, some money applied to excursions. We also get a room and equipment for worship and group activities and 24×7 security on board. As a matter of comparison, I priced out a eight-day trip to a beach area in Florida: (Airfare will be the same ($600.00), transport in/around the area ($100.00), Hotel Room 7 nights ($350.00), Food ($300.00), Entertainment ($200.00+), misc ($50.00) – totaling about $1,600 per person.
This also doesn’t account for a much more difficult time “chaperoning”, trying to coordinate eating times/locations, different entertainment options, and security for the students. I will tell you, that the planning and coordination would also be much more difficult for a land-based trip than a cruise!
